All packed and ready for our 4 hour journey to the Swaziland Boarder over Easter to Kroomdraai Camp, just a wee bit up from Songimvelo Game Reserve. Arrived Friday mid morning, settled in and were off on the bikes for a ride up the mountain. Ronelle managed to find the only place with the biggest rocks to wipe out on and now has horrible black bruises but not to worry Glen was desperate for a wee stop on Sunday so he stopped by the rocks and let them have it!
Later that evening the mist and bad weather came in and was pretty much there to stay for the rest of the weekend. Every time we lit a braai it would rain, hence the brolly! Accomodation was nice, basic but livable, besides not having a working toilet seat in the one bathroom and no door handle and light in the other one, it was very comfortable and we ate well. Well done to us girls with our list (private joke) Got to give credit where its due, the boys did a fab job of braaiing (do you spell it like that) everynight in the rain but the food was fab.... Great lamb and pork chops! Oh and dont forget the marshy's, had to braai Marshmellows afterwards for pudding, a braai is not complete without burning your hands while braaiing marshmellows!
Saturday we did a more technical ride. Through grass and donga's, up and down mountains
Stopping along the way to for a drinks break and to admire the view. We had to take our jackets off it was getting way to hot, only to put them back on later when you get further up the mountain and it starts getting chilly.Sunday we woke to mist and rain and cold weather but that was not gonna stop us. We rode for 5 hours, about 200km up and down slippery mountains, through mist and forests until we reached the dam. Whilst blasting throught the forest i came across a sign post with an aeroplane on it and a wind sock! Fancy trying to land a plane in a forest... go figure!
On a look out point along the route
Just arrived at the dam covered in mud

Once at the dam it was out with the tuna sarmies and hard boiled eggs (Note to self - dont burp in your helmut after eating tuna and egg!)
Someone lit a fire and guess what the rain started again so we had a quick rest a chow and drink, oh and a wee break (again for me) and we were off again, stopped for a fuel up along the way and then headed back, we were exhausted and filthy dirty.
We met this Aussie on the road who stopped for directions, he was on his road bike, some fancy thing, he had ridden from Spain and had been touring for 5 months and was heading to Swaziland and then down to the coast to ride from Durban to Cape Town and then flying back to Spain! Hows that for an awesome but lonely ride.
Monday we packed up, loaded up and headed back home.
Thanks to Glenn and the Team at Family Adventures (www.familyadventures.co.za) we had a fantastic time as always and always great to ride with you guys. See you again soon!Labels: Swazi Boarder Ride - 6th April 07
